It was Amy Haugland and her knitting that connected me most to the Hauglands. Not because I am a crafter of socks and tea cozies. No, rather, it was the way the gentle rhythm of the needles set an unintended pace for our conversation–and how this story would unfold. As I sat with Amy and Alex, the couple shared with me the origins of their world-renowned car collection, now numbering nearly 200 examples. The Hauglands have linked their lives to the rich history of some simply incredible, and uniquely delightful, automobiles. There couldn’t have been more perfect imagery of the collection than that from Tommy Kallgren. His photography is always a poetic, veiled narrative, the perfect threads for this piece.
